SIBELMED has collaborated in a clinical study led by Dr. Jacinto García, Head of the Otorhinolaryngology Department at Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, in which the use of automatic audiometry in Primary Care Centers has been validated. The research was carried out at the Ramón Turró Primary Care Center of the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS), with the collaboration of the Hospital del Mar Research Institute in Barcelona.

Currently, audiometry is mainly performed in hospitals and specialized centers. Although screening audiometries can be conducted in non-specialized settings, an accurate diagnosis requires the intervention of a trained technician and a physician to evaluate the results. This process can be lengthy, and the required resources are not always available in Primary Care, thus limiting its implementation.

To address these limitations, the study compared the results of automatic audiometry with noise suppressors to traditional manual audiometry performed inside an audiometric booth. It also assessed the usefulness of automatic audiometry as a diagnostic tool to facilitate and extend audiometry testing to all Primary Care centers and even outpatient settings.

The study evaluated the accuracy and clinical utility of the automatic audiometry function of the SIBELSOUND DUO audiometer in comparison with standard manual audiometry performed using the clinical audiometer SIBELSOUND 400, in a sample of 75 patients with suspected hearing loss, including both adults and children.

The results showed that the mean thresholds obtained with automatic audiometry differed by less than 5 dB from standard manual audiometry across most frequencies. Additionally, 90.9% of automatic thresholds in adults and 80.2% in children were within ±10 dB of the manual test, a level of variability considered acceptable and subclinical in routine audiological practice.

Furthermore, automatic audiometry achieved a diagnostic agreement of 88.7% compared with the manual test, increasing to 92.5% when evaluated as a screening tool to differentiate between normal hearing and hearing loss.

The average time required to perform the automatic test was approximately 8.7 minutes for both adults and children, with 86% of adults and 69% of children able to complete the automatic test.

CONCLUSION

The study concludes that SIBELMED’s automatic audiometry systems are reliable, accurate, and suitable as an initial detection tool for hearing problems, especially in non-specialized environments.

It demonstrated that the automatic audiometry systems developed by SIBELMED provide results equivalent to traditional manual tests. These tests can be performed without an audiometric booth by using noise suppressors, enabling their implementation in primary care consultations where specialized facilities are not available.

This opens the door to greater accessibility to audiological diagnosis, reducing the burden on hospital ENT services and improving early detection of hearing loss among the population.

The results of this study were presented at the 76th National Congress of the Spanish Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery (SEORL-CCC), held in Madrid last October.

Last Friday, the Madrid College of Physicians held the 4th edition of the course “Sleep Medicine for Nursing and Technicians”, organized in collaboration with the Spanish Sleep Society (SES). The event covered the latest advances in sleep medicine, with special attention to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common respiratory disorder in Spain. During the session, participants also had the opportunity to try Somnibel, our medical device designed for the treatment of positional apneas and snoring.

As part of the SEPAR 2025–2026 Year dedicated to Sleep Respiratory Disorders, the “Sleep Truck” initiative is being carried out—an itinerant project aimed at bringing sleep health closer to the public.

This vehicle will travel to different cities and attend the main pulmonology congresses in the country. It features five distinct areas where diagnostic tests, treatments, and screenings will be performed, along with spaces dedicated to health education on screen use, the risks of self-medication, and the importance of maintaining healthy sleep habits. On this occasion, it made a stop in Madrid, where visitors were also able to learn firsthand about the benefits of Somnibel.

We would like to thank the collaboration of Alejandro Pastor, member of the organization, nurse specialized in sleep disorders and a well-known science communicator on social media under the name Enfermero Morfeo, to whom we posed the following questions:

Q. Those of us working in this field are aware of the underdiagnosis of sleep disorders and the little importance given to proper rest. It’s common to hear phrases like “I’m just someone who sleeps poorly,” with people resigning themselves to live with it. How would you describe this situation, and what do you think still needs to be done?

A. Unfortunately, we continue to normalize poor sleep as if it were inherent to who we are. This resignation perpetuates underdiagnosis and delays treatments that could change lives. We still need to place sleep on the healthcare agenda with the same relevance as nutrition or exercise, and we need more screening, more training, and more resources in sleep units.

Q. In addition to the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the detection and treatment of sleep disorders, it is also essential for the population to have proper sleep education. What message would you send to the public?

A. Sleep is not a luxury or an indulgence: it is a pillar of health. Just as we take care of our diet, we must take care of how we sleep. My message is clear: if you’ve been sleeping poorly for a long time, don’t accept it. Seek help. Most sleep problems can be solved when detected and treated in time. Sleeping well is a right—and also a habit that can be learned.

Last Saturday, Sibelmed had the honor of participating in the Advanced Sleep Course, held at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP) in Lisbon. The course was organized by UCP and sponsored by Gasoxmed.

During the event, Dr. Jordi Rigau, PhD and Director of R&D at Sibelmed, delivered a lecture focused on positional therapies for the treatment of sleep apnea—a condition that affects millions of people worldwide and demands increasingly personalized and effective therapeutic approaches.

In his presentation, Dr. Rigau talked about Somnibel, our non-invasive medical solution for positional sleep apnea. Somnibel is a small device worn on the forehead that delivers a gentle vibratory stimulus when the patient lies in a supine position, helping to reduce respiratory events without significantly affecting sleep quality. This technology offers a comfortable and effective alternative for patients who experience predominantly supine-related apnea and are looking for an option beyond traditional CPAP therapy.

Sibelmed’s participation in this course reflects our ongoing commitment to scientific dissemination, technological innovation, and international collaboration in the field of sleep medicine.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Gasoxmed, sponsor of the event, as well as to Dr. Susana Falardo (DMD, MSc, PhD, IC‑ABDSM, EB‑EADSM) and Dr. Amélia Maria dos Santos Feliciano (MD, MSc, PhD) for their kind invitation, excellent coordination, and warm hospitality.

At Sibelmed, we greatly value these opportunities for knowledge exchange that drive progress in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing.

Study Design

Participants: 33 patients (58% women), aged between 11 and 80 years.

Protocol: Each patient underwent two randomized spirometry tests according to the 2019 ATS/ERS recommendations.

Analyzed parameters: FVC, FEV₁, FEV₁/FVC, and PEF.

Key Results

A significant correlation was observed between the two devices across all variables analyzed (r > 0.92).

Bland-Altman analysis showed good agreement between measurements.

Statistical differences in FVC and FEV₁ were not clinically relevant.

The diagnostic concordance rate reached 93.9%, with a sensitivity of 93.3%, specificity of 94.4%, and a Cohen’s kappa coefficient of 0.878, demonstrating high accuracy in distinguishing between normal and pathological respiratory patterns.

Conclusion

The results support the clinical validity of the Datospir Touch as a reliable tool for routine spirometry testing. Its diagnostic precision and compatibility with bacterial/viral filters make it a safe and effective option for respiratory assessment in the post-pandemic context.

Today is the World Sleep Day, celebrated under the slogan “Make Sleep Health a Priority”, which reminds us of the importance of good rest for our well-being. Because sleeping well improves physical health, strengthens the immune system, optimizes memory and concentration, regulates mood, and increases productivity. Additionally, it reduces the risk of diseases and contributes to a longer and healthier life.

This year, we want to make a special mention of the clinical study we conducted with Somnibel, our therapy for positional apnea and snoring.

This study was carried out simultaneously at the Hospital Universitario de Araba and the Hospital Universitari Arnau de Vilanova de Lleida, under the supervision of Dr. Joaquín Durán and Dr. Ferrán Barbé, leading figures in the world of sleep and two of the most influential researchers internationally.

The study involved 128 patients, who were randomly divided into 3 groups:

Active Somnibel device

Inactive Somnibel device, in placebo mode

No Somnibel, only sleep hygiene guidelines

All participants underwent a first polysomnography, then spent 3 months with or without the device, depending on the study group they were in, and at the end, another polysomnography was performed, from which the conclusions were drawn.

The results of the clinical study support the effectiveness of Somnibel in reducing positional apneas. Here are the main validated data for patients in the active Somnibel therapy group:

Reduces apnea index

Reduces time spent in the supine position

Increases blood oxygen saturation

Improves sleep quality: Increases deep sleep time and reduces the number of micro awakenings.

Increases total sleep time

The device has proved a high level of compliance among patients with positional apneas (POSA), both in terms of usage time and the percentage of days used. Users have expressed a high level of satisfaction and most notably, from the very first day, the device effectively reduces the time spent with the head in the supine position. A reliable and effective option for patients seeking to improve their rest and well-being.

Dear partner,

We would like to share that we have made a significant effort to obtain the CE MDR certification (EU) 2017/745 (the new European Medical Devices Regulation), and at SIBELMED, we are still moving forward with determination to complete the process.

A large part of our products received the new certification in 2024 and the rest are in the transition process, with certification expected to be finalized soon. Throughout this challenging adaptation to the MDR, we have faced various hurdles, from updating our design and clinical evaluation processes to implementing the strict quality standards required. This major achievement has been possible thanks to a rigorous process of audits and continuous review of our procedures, representing an important milestone for SIBELMED.

The MDR certification not only guarantees the safety and quality of our products but also reinforces SIBELMED as a trusted leader both nationally and internationally.

This is a major accomplishment that few manufacturers have achieved due to the obstacles involved. All of this has been made possible by your trust.

We continue to move forward, growing together.

Disposable transducer with integrated filter for a safer, more comfortable and faster spirometry.

Based on the recommendations of the ERS society on lung function due to COVID-19, we have developed an innovative solution that integrates a transducer and filter in a single piece, making it the only 2 in 1 solution on the market.

This transducer reduces the risk of contagion between patient and technician during the spirometry test, thanks to its bacterial filtration of 99.99999% and its viral filtration of 99.9981%.

Our solution has been developed under strict quality standards and meets the requirements of ATS / ERS societies.

Get double savings:

Economical, as you only need one single consumable.

Time, since being a disposable system does not require a deep cleaning of the transducer.

With this disposable transducer you will maximize hygiene, as it is individually packaged.

It is compatible with our Datospir Touch & Datospir Aira spirometers.
